Surgery

Our sweetman, with all four legs until Monday 12/17

Our sweet boy was hit on Friday 12/7/12 by a neighbor coming home from work. I immediately took him to the vet after the accident and the first vet told me to put him down because recovery was going to be expensive. I was not a happy fur mom. I told her that that was not an option. Mentally Cody was still the same as always… he just had a major limp and some bleeding. I asked her to give him an IV and pain meds to take home. We went home after the IV with pain meds and an antibiotic. The next morning I took Cody to his regular vet, who was beyond thankful that I hadn’t put him down. They did x-rays and blood work. His x-rays confirmed a dislocated and fractured front right elbow. His lab work came back great minus one elevated liver enzyme that was not of much concern. Two vets attempted to put his elbow back in place and had no success. I was pleased to see how many members of the staff were willing to stay two+ hours late on a Saturday evening to try and “fix” my pups elbow. Since they were unsuccessful they referred me to an orthopedic surgeon. Monday we discussed the possibility of a successful reconstructive surgery and the outcome looked down right disheartening. Cody’s elbow would never have the same mobility and most likely cause much unneeded pain and arthritis. The decision was made that we will amputate the leg. Cody will go in for surgery on Monday 12/17. I am thrilled that I went with my gut and did not allow the initial vet to put him down. I look forward to many more years with my handsome man who already has a unique look and personality.

Wow that’s unreal that a vet would say that, he looks so young and healthy. Yay for going with your instinct!

Good luck next week, we will be here to help however we can. Don’t be shy!
